So, the commonwealth games are only few days away from starting in our very own New Delhi. Oh yes, with it came all the unwanted fiasco about corruption. People have talked - a lot about the controversy which surrounds the game even today. But I'm not going to add to that pile.
The very concept of Commonwealth Games is morally wrong. Every 4 years, the United Kingdom celebrates by hosting an event which comprises of all the countries which it ruled once. So, what are the commonwealth games? An event to celebrate the slavery which was imposed on countries like India? Instead of trying too hard to host an event like this, India should have backed out of it years back!
If we had invested the same amount of money which we are using to host the games into actual sports development, it would have been sufficient enough to develop the sports facility manifold in all parts of the country. Take a look at China - They were much similar to India during the 1950s. They avoided participating in the Olympics between 1956 and 1980 and rather spent all their money into sports development. Once they were strong enough to win medals, they entered the games and shook the world! Now they are competent enough to top the Olympic Medal Tally. But it is the paradox of India to be too reluctant to do anything which will provide "actual" improvement.
Coming back to the commonwealth issue, did you know that these games were started as the British Empire Games in 1930? Then they changed the name to Commonwealth Games only in 1970 so that all the countries which Britain ruled would get a feel of an equal just for 2 weeks. Yes, these are the very games for which we are getting meaninglessly excited. In order to celebrate the empire of the Great Britain, we are pouring in millions of our nation's money!
You might have known about the Torch Relay in the Olympics do you know what the equavalent of that is known in the CWG? - The Queen's Baton Relay. The Baton carries a message from the Queen of Britain and at first it relayed only in Britain but now of course, it crosses around 20 countries. If this was really an event of celebrating freedom, why call it the Queen's Baton relay?
Even after reading this, if you still believe in the values of CWG, I'm no one to stop you! But In my humble opinion, India doesn't need commonwealth games. We already have the South Asian games, Asian Games and the Olympics! Time has come for us to withdraw from this event of celebrating slavery! It is not a celebration of the countries rules by the British Empire rather an event for celebrating racial discrimination and monarchy!
